As you may have heard, I have decided to run for the Long Beach City Council seat representing the 5th District in East Long Beach. As a resident in the 5th District for many years, and a single parent of two school-aged children, I have been considering serving our great city for a number of years volunteering my time with non-profits. My decision to run for the 5th came after our family home was devastated by a fire and we were faced with the many challenges in rebuilding our home. The house sat longer, and it was significantly harder, to get services than it had to be. Our residents and businesses in the City’s 5th District deserve a strong voice who is committed to constituent services, in addition to the wider issues of the City.
As a former Intern for the Honorable Steven Horn and a former District Office Representative for Debra Bowen of the California State Assembly, I understand the importance of taking and following through on constituent requests. I want to be that voice for the 5th District.
Our campaign is powered by a secret weapon-- the support of family and friends like you! I am deeply grateful for every dollar we raise and hope you will support my campaign for the 5th District. Please use this link to make your donation before the first public fundraising reporting deadline of 6/30/2021. The limit is $400 per person and per business, not $400 per household.
We are off to a great start against a strong field of candidates and I am confident that with your help, we will accomplish meaningful change for the residents and businesses of the 5th District.
Before making her home of more than two decades in the 5th District in October of 2001, where today she raises her family, Attorney Dobson was born at Long Beach Memorial Memorial Hospital and grew up on the Westside of Long Beach. She attended John Muir Elementary, Stephens Middle, and Poly High, before working her way through California State University, Long Beach with Summer and Winter Sessions at Long Beach City College. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Michele knew that a life of public service was her pathway to being a servant leader. In pursuit of being a powerful voice for making a meaningful difference, Michele graduated from law school. Between classes and the library, she had the pleasure of working as a substitute teacher in LBUSD. In preparation for a successful legal career, she worked for 11 years as a law clerk and project attorney in a small civil practice in Central Long Beach, serving low-income and disadvantaged residents.
In addition to working with children and educators, Michele embraced an opportunity to work as a law clerk with Community Legal Services of Los Angeles, commonly known as Legal Aid. She supported clients dealing with housing and family law, as well as those connected to the Domestic Violence Clinic at the Superior Court of California in Norwalk, California.
Michele never stopped studying and worked several positions to fund her education, in undergraduate’s school and Law School, while she gained meaningful Public Policy and Administration experience. In undergraduate’s school at CSULB, she was elated to work as a Congressional Intern for Congressman Steven Horn (R) in the City of Long Beach and as a District Office Field Representative for Debra Bowen (D), a member of the California State Assembly. No matter the role, Michele has maintained a steadfast focus on working on and around win-win public policy that embodies a shared-fate mentality and prioritizes wide-reaching positive outcomes for our community.
After beginning her career as a Criminal Defense Attorney with the Orange County Public Defenders' Office, Michele joined a corporate law firm where she excelled at civil defense. After becoming a parent, Michele launched her own firm in Long Beach in 2005, with much of the practice focused on supporting the matters of the more than a dozen non-profit community organizations and defending Small to Medium Sized Businesses.
Michele has a proud and rewarding history of serving on the boards of the several Long Beach community-based organizations that she supports, including the the Arts Council, California Conference for Equality and Justice, Long Beach City College Foundation, Long Beach Community Foundation, Long Beach Day Nursery, Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach Opera, YMCA of Greater Long Beach Metro, Musical Theatre West, Steel Magnolias, and Tichenor Clinic for Children. Michele has had the pleasure of humbly accepting numerous recognitions and honors for her decades of work to benefit Long Beach—most recently she was named in the Grunion Gazette’s Kindness issue for “Always Lending a Helping Hand'', inducted into the Long Beach City College Hall of Fame, and was the first-ever recipient of the CSULB Black Excellence Award for Alumnae of the Year.
